While some folks enjoy getting dressed up for a night out at their favorite hot spot, there are those who prefer a dive bar over a boujee club, for some the dirt and dust of an outdoor festival gets them excited, while others may enjoy a nice dark warehouse party. Personally, you don't need to vibe check me when we're out and about because I like it all; from small grimy hole in the wall clubs to mega venues, as long as there is good music playing, IDC where the fk I'm at. It's about the music and the message contained their in; quality lyrics live rent free in my head for good reason. I think that's true for most folks, because essentially it's not where you're at, it's more about who you're with, how the music is being curated and presented, and what message those tunes are purveying. Which brings me to the Stones classic 'Gimmie Shelter'... hearing this song as a youth, having a father that was in the Vietnam War, it was clear the song had dark undertones, the lyrics mirrored the sheer horror people were experiencing at the time. Keith Richards and Mick Jagger wrote the lyrics, and some of those vocals, especially the 'rape / murder' lyrics belted out by Merry Clayton, really shook the public. With almost everyone is a producer or Dj today, a seemingly non stop sea of corny pop reworks flooding my inbox, everywhere you look thirsty folks are doing whatever they need to do to become insta-famous and 99.9% of it has nothing to do with talent, it looks more and more like we forget MUSIC was once a monstrously powerful tool wielded by the people. Songs once spoke for the massive, songs helped spark some incredibly important movements over the years, songs changed minds.Although I do write songs and sometimes perform my own lyrics, I'm far from a poet or an activist. I do however possess the ability to shine a light on well written messages delivered by much better songwriters from years past... and so I give you my 'GIMMIE SHELTER' remix. I took what I believe are the key statements from the Stones classic in an attempt to not only entertain, but also to inform. I think what Mick and the rest of the gang were screaming about some 60+ years ago is just as important and timely today as those lyrics were back then. So, without diving into the horrible shit that's going on in our world today, lets zoom in on the message: be kind to your fellow humans, you don't really know what sort of shit someone is going through, even if their IG shows them having a wonderful life, their reality may be very different, depression and mental illness is real, and it costs us nothing to simply be nicer in our day to day interactions with each other. And please remember, as hard as it may be, try to be grateful, things could be much worse. I hope you enjoy my minimal, odd rework of Gimmie Shelter as much as I've enjoyed playing it as of late...
