Coming of age and going to clubs in New York City pre-social media, pre-Starbucks era was like a movie, not sure what movie, maybe it was a combination of all the movies about NYC you've ever seen. Like a blend of Serpico and Kids, Studio 54 but without the candy coating, New York City in the 80s and 90s was fkn insane... highest crime rate in the country, crack epidemic was in full swing, but then there was the birth of the punk movement, Kool Herc was creating what was to become HIPHOP and venues like the Paradise Garage and Max's Kansas City were thriving. Inhibitions were running wild, there was no threat of being caught on camera, everyone was fkn everyone, everyone was snorting or smoking something, it was a creative cesspool unlike anything seen before or since... and yet, tons of quality music and art emerged from that mayhem.

If you were in the club scene, chances are you went roller skating at the Roxy or any number of rinks that were around at the time. Just like nightclubs, you were guaranteed to hear music for the first time at the roller rink, and if you were still a teenager this was your only chance to get a taste of what the new hot songs were.
